Two seperate attacks on Animal Rights Activists

category dublin | animal rights | press release author Thursday July 27, 2006 02:45author by Bernie Wright - Alliance for Animal Rightsauthor address P O Box 4734. Dublin.1author phone 085 7371810 Report this post to the editors

In two seperate incidents this evening, members of Circus SYDNEY(a Courtney Circus / previously Circus OZZ and Circus NEW YORK) assaulted different activists both inside and outside the circus.

The first incident happened when some activists from The Alliance for Animal Rights were giving out flyers on the footpath outside the Circus now in Blackrock. A circus member attempted to get one by the neck and take their leaflets.

The second incident happened when four people including two minors and a wild animal expert attended the actual show. A female was set upon by a circus member and had her digital camera snatched and batteries removed. She had to attend St Vincents Hospital for treatment for a possible joint fracture in her hand, she was also verbally threatened. Activists called for Gardai assistance.

Gardai were notified on both occasions.

further information tomorrow.

Circus SYDNEY(a Courtney Circus aka Circus OZZ, Circus NEW YORK) has an abysmal record of attacks on Irish citizens. Yesterday's attacks on animal rights activists by Circus SYDNEY in Blackrock should be condemned by all and a thorough investigation by An Garda Síochána should be carried out. If An Garda Síochána appear to show an unwillingness to investigate seriously such attacks, then the whole area of security and safety for animal rights activists will have to be looked into.

Circus SYDNEY have shown Ireland that they have no regard for the safety of Irish citizens and no regard for animal welfare. They allow Irish children to have unsupervised access after shows to caged wild animals. Recently, in Cork, children opened a pen of a Kangaroo and it went missing and the Circus then abandoned the animal. In Co. Laois, they abandoned a monkey (who attacked members of the public) in a van leaving the monkey to die - it had no food or water and was found in appalling conditions over a week later.

These animals should be seized by the Dept. of Agriculture and a ban on all future animal circuses carrying on business in Ireland should be implemented by those in Leinster House.

Parents should be warned that by bringing their children to Circus SYDNEY - they are putting their children's safety at risk and supporting animal cruelty.

Best wishes and a speedy recovery to the activists injured by Circus SYDNEY.

Animal rights supporters have to realise that people will react badly if they see the wages threatened. I have see fisherman attacked because the use worms. It all depends on your personal views; you can not force them on anybody

this is not the first time that afar extremists have being beaten up by the circus judging by other reports from indymedia. it seems to be you AFAR bring trouble whever you turn up i wont be supporting you thats for sure.

author by catladypublication date Thu Jul 27, 2006 22:19author address author phone Report this post to the editors

I would be interested in knowing where, when and how exactly those fishermen were "attacked", and by whom exactly?

Whatever the details, your claim that people will react badly when wages are threatened is irrelevant, obvious and the root of the problem of animal (both human and non-human) abuse in our world. Companies react badly when profits are threatened, slave owners react badly when their entire system is threatened, and so on and so on. This does not make a system which enslaves, tortures ot oppresses more vulnerable beings morally justifiable or tolerable.

The fact that activists are attacked by the thugs involved in the abuse does not make those activists troublemakers. The "trouble" is created by and for the perpetuation of a system designed to line the pockets of individuals with no respect for life, or anything else besides their own bank balances.

I hope the injured parties have a speedy recovery and that a proper, official investigation is launched by the gardai into both the assaults of the activist animals and the condition of the enslaved animals.

Finally "by", if I came and assaulted you because you annoyed me, you would be a troublemaker (according to your own logic at least)! Think about it...

...and ignore the person who posted that they had seen fishermen attacked for using worms, not a contribution to be taken seriously. To the person who said AFAR are extremists and bring trouble upon themselves, they don't offer anything to support this view. They are obviously either people with a vested interest in animal cruelty of some kind or possibly afflicted with exceptionally poor powers of analysis.

Again, well done AFAR!!

The comment about the monkey being kept captive is wrong. the monkey has no connection with the show. It was a kids show that travelled playing indoor venues.I love to see animals in the circus its magical for children and long may it continue! I have never witnessed any animals being abused at any circus. Activists who protest outside circuses bring to peoples intrest that the circus has animals and you'll find that it increases attendance of the paying public.

author by Gloriapublication date Sun Jul 30, 2006 22:55author address author phone Report this post to the editors

you do not make yourself clear - are you trying to say the monkey had nothing to do with any circus and was part of a 'kids show'?

The monkey in question was being kept for the purposes of 'entertaining' people - call it what you will, circus, travelling show. The monkey had no choice about this and was left to die in a van. The monkey avoided this fate as workmen found it - not thanks to any of the owners or employees of the circus or travellng show.

As for your comment 'I love to see animals in the circus its magical for children and long may it continue!' you are of course entitled to your outdated views, personally I think it is rather disturbing that you actually admit you like to witness the results of animal torture. Worse still is the thought of any children under your care being exposed to it.

You say ' I have never witnessed any animals being abused at any circus'. I take it you are a connuisseur of the circus then? I have the following suggestion to make in respect of this - perhaps you never witnessed abuse of animals at any of the circuses you patronized because...you have a rather low level of perception in general to events going on around you, and this has shown itself in your obliviousness to the fear, discomfort and reluctance of wild animals being forced into doing unnatural tricks under threat of torture. I would suggest you review this, for the sake of any humans that you may spend time with, as it has been shown that those who exhibit indifference and/or pleasure to animal suffering do likewise with humans.

Why not have a look at www.aran.ie, bottom left hand corner. See for yourself the elephant training methods.

In relation to your other comment 'Activists who protest outside circuses bring to peoples intrest that the circus has animals and you'll find that it increases attendance of the paying public' not true at all. Many people have got fliers and information on animal circuses as they are about to go in and changed their minds as they then realize the nature of the disgusting the spectacle inside is. By your reasoning, protests of any kind bring publicity to whatever is being protested against!! In that case why does anyone protest...?!?

Even if nobody cared about animal suffering in relation to circuses, this type of entertainment is on the way out. This is shown by the demise of the 'dancing bear' spectacle in Eastern Europe and many other sorry sights which are thankfully becoming a thing of the past. People are demanding proper entertainment. Why would somebody wish to see wild animals in the sorry condition and unnatural state they are generally in, in a circus when they can see them on National Geographic? Don't bother to answer that.

Coming from a circus person and an animal trainer, it's in our best interest to have animals healthy and happy. If animals should not be on Circus's then the next step will be Zoo's, Horse jumping, racing; where the poor beast is pushed to the limit by whip, and in some cases broken limbs and have been put down while people put bets on in the bookies, plus there are many more sports and hobbies that involve and use animals for people's enjoyment .The dog shows, where dogs are made jump through hoops and go through obstacles; where sheepdogs are made work all day, can anyone tell me whether all these creatures are content with their lives?? Also, I'd like to know how many of you who made a comment about "animals on circus's been" wrong eat animals?? Speaking personally, I have bought animals not because i wanted them, but because they were poorly kept and obviously in need of a caring owner. As a final thought I believe that there are a lot of organisations (including private) that should be investigated instead of focusing only on the public
shows like the circus.

y? Do use always bring the animals in to it

if use would go and sort out half of the farms and zoos an leave the circus alone

That every year AFAR gets thumped at a circus, and never has any video, audio or video evidence to back this up?
Why do the Gardai never prosecute the attackers? Is it because AFAR is reluctant to take it into the courts?
Why is it always AFAR that gets attacked? You never hear of any of the other animal rights groups getting attacked,so one would guess aFAR isnt as peaceful as they make out to be?
