The latest Christian Aid report, ‘The climate of poverty: the facts, fears and hope’, launched to coincide with Christian Aid Week (14-20 May), highlights that climate change is now threatening development goals for billions of the world’s poorest people. The report reveals the stark reality that a staggering 182 million people in sub-Saharan Africa alone could die of disease directly attributable to climate change by the end of the century. Many millions more throughout the world face death and devastation due to climate-induced floods, famine, drought and conflict. The report calls on the Irish government to lead rich countries in taking urgent action to curb global warming. The Union of Students in Ireland (USI) is set to distribute 40,000 condoms to Irish students as part of the ‘He Says, You Say’ sexual health campaign launched earlier this week during National Condom Week sponsored by Durex. The campaign – also endorsed by the Crisis Pregnancy Agency and the Dublin Aids Alliance – will see 30,000 sponsored condoms distributed to students at the Trinity Ball tomorrow evening (Friday 12th May). read full story / add a comment

With the recent drop of Huntingdon Life Sciences (stock symbol: LSRI) off of the Pink Sheets and onto the 'Grey Market' and the loss of their last significant institutional investor, Columbia Management/Bank of America, the only thing keeping HLS afloat is their key customers and suppliers. “What does the future hold for Europe?” The European Parliament has posed this question as the theme for the European Day celebrations which took place on the 8th & 9th of May. In Austria, European Parliament President Josep Borrell and the Commission President José Manuel Barroso will be presiding over a forum to discuss the European Union in the world, globalisation and the EU social model, liberty security and justice, and the future funding of the EU.
