éirígí chairperson Brian Leeson has called for workers at the Waterford Crystal site to start producing on their own terms as the only way to safeguard their jobs. While the occupation of the site continues, the best bid received for the company so far, from a group called Clarion, would mean the loss of 400 jobs. A US company that has also joined the bidding wants to keep only the Waterford Crystal name and lay off all the workers. read full story / add a comment

Before Christmas of 2007, the Flairline Fashions Group gave a verbal guarantee that they would become fur free by 2008 and would send confirmation in writing to ALiberation. Since then they have continued to sell animal fur. ALiberation are now unsuspending their campaign to persuade the Flairline Fashions Group to become Fur Free. This Saturday an event will be held outside of Pamela Scott on Grafton Street, Dublin to urge the Flairline Fashions Group to stop selling animal fur. This will coincide with the “Worldwide Information Days Against Fur” weekend. read full story / add a comment

Cork is biting back at the recession with a new web-started community which aims to get us outside working together to grow our own food. Cork Food Web imagines a network of community gardens, allotments, urban and rural farms and food parks all over Cork city and county run autonomously by local communities and linked by the shared need to feed ourselves and mind our environment. The website is a ‘social networking site’ so allows users to create their own profile, get to know each other and form groups. In just a few months of existence membership has grown to 154, with members from the city and all across Cork county forming online interest groups, exchanging information and skills and creating events together. read full story / add a comment

The government’s cutbacks in education will have a drastic effect on Primary schools in Tralee. People Before Profit support local demands for their reversal. Scoil Eoin, which will have over 600 students next year, will lose one teacher as a direct result of the increase in class sizes and will face cutbacks in language support staff which will have a severe impact on students for whom English is not their first language. In addition three quarters of its students are studying in prefabs and in a building dating back to 1858! They are still waiting for a new school. read full story / add a comment

The AOHS is pleased to hear of the financial difficulties of the Irish Coursing Club due to a court ruling that it must pay damages to a land developer Greenband Investments, on the eve of the 2009 ICC final in Clonmel. Despite strong public opinion which favours an end to this outdated and barbaric pursuit, Coursing is still hanging in there, the pastime of the minority cloth-cap brigade. On Tuesday 27th January, Ógra Shinn Féin joined the NYCI (National Youth Council of Ireland) outside Leinster house to demand that the voting age be lowered to 16. Sinn Féin TD Aengus O’Snodaigh was also in attendance to demonstrate his personal and party support for the initiative. The ‘New Age to Vote’ campaign launch hopes to spark a debate on this issue among 16 and 17 year olds, with the aim of opening up discussion forums and campaign groups across Ireland that demand the voting age to be lowered, ensuring young people have a voice. read full story / add a comment
