People Before Profit Alliance Councillors Joan Collins and Brid Smith Statement on election of Lord Mayor by Dublin City Councillors People Before Profit to provide real opposition on Dublin City Council Once again people in Dublin have voted for change on their City Council. In 2004 Labour was voted in as the largest group, ending Fianna Fail’s domination of the council. Instead of change, the people were treated to a game of musical chairs, with Labour entering a deal to divvy up the Mayorship and committee chairs with Fine Gael, and the sole Green and PD Councillors. When that deal broke down, Labour concluded an arrangement with Fianna Fail. The merry go round now continues with Labour in a deal for the new council with Fine Gael. read full story / add a comment

Any person who is stopped and detained by Immigration Officers in Northern Ireland can now call the free and confidential Helpline number. A new arts and literary publication featuring contributions by Francesco Clemente, Seamus Heaney, Nalini Malani, David Mitchell, Sean Scully, Colm Tóibín and a host of other leading art world figures, will be launched by the Irish Museum of Modern Art at 6.00pm on Thursday 11 June 2009. Boulevard Magenta is the brain child of IMMA’s Director, Enrique Juncosa, himself a noted poet, who has brought together a collection of works ranging across the visual arts, prose, poetry, music, film and architecture for the first issue of the biannual magazine. The launch coincides with the opening of a new exhibition at the Museum by the celebrated American artist Terry Winters, who has contributed nine drawings incorporating texts by the American writer Ben Marcus to the publication. read full story / add a comment

Pathways to Palestine, a team of Irish cyclists stopped off in Galway on the Irish leg of their trip to Gaza to baptise their bikes and name them after doctors and paramedics targeted in the recent Israeli invaion of Gaza. Young people in Ireland are not as uninterested in the upcoming elections as many people might think. Instead they are finding the political system inaccessible, confusing and uninspiring. That’s the view of the SpunOut.ie National Youth Organisation, which reaches 100,000s of young people each year. According to SpunOut.ie there are approximately 500,000 young people in Ireland between the ages of 18 and 25 and according to a SpunOut.ie poll, up to 70% (350,000) of these may not be voting on Friday. read full story / add a comment

The European election campaign is now in it's final push. The main leaflet for Joe Higgins' campaign has been produced, with the hope of getting it into 200,000 homes in the next week. We have produced 2,000 new full colour posters which we need to get up. In order to do that we are launching an appeal for volunteers to help out - take a bundle of leaflets for your estate or one nearby, spare an hour to put up some posters, hand out leaflets with Joe in town or donate towards the cost of the campaign. The People Before Profit Alliance has today called on the eighteen religious orders identified by the Ryan Report as culpable of gross maltreatment of children to fully acknowledge their guilt and responsibility. A spokesperson for PBPA said, "We are profoundly shocked by the behaviour of the religious orders, who are now further compounding the abuse they perpetrated by their brazen refusal to re-open a deal which they negotiated in bad faith." read full story / add a comment
