In a press release on 19th August 2006, the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, Noel Dempsey, announced the latest round of exploration licences for the Donegal, Slyne and Erris Basins. The future of Ireland's oil and gas resources is now being decided by the Irish Government in a process patently lacking in democratic legitmacy and accountability. These issues were debated at the “Exploring Atlantic Ireland 2006” conference sponsored by the Department and other interested parties. The conference discussed the so-called Irish Atlantic Margin Petroleum Province, the industry term for the Porcupine, Rockall, Slyne, Erris, and Donegal basins. The conference press statement stated that what it termed the “waters west of Ireland” contain several large sedimentary basins, broadly similar geologically to the basins of the Atlantic margins of Norway, the UK (the North Sea fields), and Canada (the Newfoundland fields). read full story / add a comment

It’s that time of year again folks. Yep, it’s budget time. But this year is a little different due to the upcoming elections scheduled for this summer. Brian Cowen has got his Santa Claus costume on again and he’s going to open his magic sack and give us what we all want for crimbo. Because of course, we have been very good boys and girls all year – and haven’t passed even one motion of “no confidence” in his government. This, despite the fact that Bertie has been up to his eyes in crap all year. No surprise I suppose, and from what I make of it they’ll be back in again next term with Labour. Sure with their sluttish ways, it’s quite obvious that if they’re so willing to get into bed with the Blueshirts, they’d jump into the leaba with anybody (i.e. Fianna Fail) and to hell with the “working man” they claim to stand for……but that’s another story….. read full story / add a comment

A five judge panel yesterday returned a two year old child to her natural parents after an appeal which saw the child's removal from the couple whom had adopted her from the age of three months. The Media stated the Judge's decision was based on the primacy of the family within the Irish Constitution. The Natural parents are now married and therefore are considered in Irish law to be the traditional or natural family. read full story / add a comment

Water is in the process of being privatised by stealth. Citizens must inform themselves regarding the ongoing process to hand our water over to a private multi-national company to make profit and learn from the experiences in other jurisdicitons where privatisation has brought hardship to communities and particulatly to the most vulnerable members. Voters should seek to have this placed on the issues list for the upcoming general election. read full story / add a comment

Dear Tanaiste and Minister for Justice, It is manifestly clear to me as a constituent in the Rathmines area that your failure to grasp the issues of community opposition to the high pressure gas pipeline in Rossport, coupled with your failure to 'Watchdog this Corrupt Fianna Fail Administration' even as you climbed a lampost in Ranelagh, to underscore your desire to end corrupt practice is a sham performance. read full story / add a comment

To whom it concerns, I must start off by saying that I approve of the Corrib gas coming ashore. I attended a meeting in Belmullet 30 months ago and I voted for this project to go ahead. There were over 800 people there and all but 5 voted in favour. I later worked on the project at Ballinaboy but no longer do so. read full story / add a comment

When the leader of a political party with a track record on social policy like Fianna Fail’s starts talking about children’s rights, it’s time to sit up and be alarmed – particularly so when it is in the vicinity of a general election. Fianna Fail are a party who have perfected the art of claiming to do one thing while in fact doing its opposite. The issue of child protection should not be used as a back door through which further reductions in the rights of parents to secure adequate state services for their children is introduced. read full story / add a comment

Since 1997 I have endeavoured to highlight the need to establish an environmenal end of life vehicle disposal network that would comply with an EU Directive on End of Life Vehicles and help clean up the environment for all of our people to enjoy. My plan was to make Ireland the pride of Europe and a leader in the proper environment recycling and disposal of motor vehicles. Despite knocking on many doors, I experienced an old Irish problem of notyet,not yet, not yet. read full story / add a comment

The Skelligs Rocks, 8 miles off the coast of Co. Kerry, constitute one of only two UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Ireland. However, the Office of Public Works (OPW) is currently engaged in reconstruction work there. On the South Peak of Skellig Michael, an altar, dating probably to the ninth century, has been destroyed by unsupervised workmen. In addition, there has been extensive rebuilding carried out on the main complex, which has led to considerable damage to the original structures. The work has proceeded without an Environmental Impact Assessment; while the Department of the Environment and OPW have argued that, because the Skelligs are a national monument (thus covered by the National Monuments Act 2004) and because the current work is part of an ongoing programme of conservation dating back to the 1980’s, neither an EIA nor planning permission is necessary. read full story / add a comment

The recent Bertie Ahern controversy showed that the Irish Times believes it has a right to depose Taoisigh it disapproves of. They already have the scalps of Haughey and Reynolds and now they want Bertie's. The paper holds such a powerful position in Irish public life that its faults cannot be openly discussed. A debate between Minister for Communications, Noel Dempsey, and Ryle Dwyer of the Irish Examiner illustrates the problem. Dempsey failed to mention that the paper broke the law. Neither did he dare to challenge the paper about its over the top anti-Fianna Fail bias. And nobody dares to mention the connection between the paper and the British Foreign Office initiated by Major Thomas McDowell in 1969. So confident are the media professionals who defend the paper, that they simply toss off rhetorical put downs, as in Ryle Dwyers's reply to the Minister. It is past time that the bastion of Irish investigative journalism should itself be investigated. read full story / add a comment

Sometime ago, retired Justice Kinlan wrote a damning report on our prisons. McDowell, Minister for Justice Equality and Law Reform, went into a 'huff'. He accused Justice Kinlan of being out to get him. The question remains:- A young man was brutally murdered in a cell while five prisoners looked on. Six people sharing one cell.....this had to end in disaster at some stage. read full story / add a comment

The Scariest thing in Derry this Halloween “Last night I watched our city stagger out of the bars and clubs. Broken bottles and cut eyes. Girls in bright clothes taunting boys with gold rings. I stood there for hours listening as it turned blunt and angrily cast around for the wrong look or a flicker of fear to attack. A publication called Centre Focus is a regular newspaper funded by FAS. It uses as an office the Centre for The unemployed North Main st. The building is owned by Cork Council of Trade unions. In a series of tabloid style articles it has raised concerns about sterotyping and attackiing those that are involved in progressive activist work and in particular the greater understanding between different ethnic and religous groups. Many complaints have been made about its editorial style but why is it not being discussed on a wider format.? read full story / add a comment |
