A series of features examining the background to the creation and development of mutant space.ie, an alternative Irish arts resource. The resource is set up to function as a co-op that works on the gift economy principle. In other words rather than use money in exchange for resources members use their own skills and resources as an alternative form of economic exchange.
Mutant space is open to everybody and anybody and does not differentiate between the artist and non-artist, professional or amateur, it is about supporting people who have ideas but not the resources to realise them read full story / add a comment

Amnesty International has gathered testimony from people still struggling to rebuild their lives following Operation “Cast Lead”, which killed around 1,400 Palestinians and injured thousands more. Israel must end its suffocating blockade of the Gaza Strip, which has left more than 1.4 million Palestinians cut off from the outside world and struggling with desperate poverty, Amnesty International said today, one year on from the end of Israel’s military offensive in Gaza. read full story / add a comment

Unless the muscle of the US and its government can be turned around and Obama starts listening to his emissary George Mitchell and to a lesser degree Ms Clinton there will be no real change either in Gaza , the border crossings or any hope of Israeli compliance with International Justice and humanity.
Neither can any advancement towards a 2 state solution be even conceived until the Israelis agree to Jerusalem being the Capital City for both Israel and Palestine. read full story / add a comment

Privileged officers of the State getting generous pensions, having taken an oath to the State or to their profession have chosen to go on strike in a wave of rolling industrial actions which set out to subvert some of the most essential services in the State.

In other circumstances this would be deemed sedition .

On the 61st anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. - (UDHR)
I quote Oscar wilde more than all the others; he more than anyone would have appreciated

this charter . It is just that it is not binding .it is not a law. It is aspirational ; but it is

inspirational . You don’t need to read it through. The language is turgid in places. Its meant to

endure . After 60 years the wording may seem esoteric .but if you re read it , ask yourself ;

how else could this be written to relate to all society.
I believe it is written for all the children of the womb of the Universe .
But , I will confess that I quote Oscar not only because he is one of the most quoted people in

the history of English language .

Cowen seems more beaten by the day. The easy clichéd sound bites gone. These comments are from a number of Comrades mainly from a CWI and IMT background. But we think they will find an echo with Comrades from many other left backgrounds. We have concluded that the internal life of just about every left group is unhealthy, overly centralized, too top down, even we would go so far as saying to some extent undemocratic. We believe that the internal lives of these groups draw from the period when the Bolshevik party was degenerating and being taken over by Stalinism and along with that became negatively influenced by many decades when they were isolated from the mass workers movement. The recent crisis in the IMT is a reflection of these false methods of organizing which are common to just about all revolutionary left groups. We try to discuss this here. We look forward to hearing from Comrades. See our Learning From the Past link and our blog address. John Throne. read full story / add a comment

“Cowardice asks the question - is it safe? Expediency asks the question - is it politic?
Vanity asks the question - is it popular? But conscience asks the question is it right?
And there comes a time when one must take a position
that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular;
but one must take it because it is right.”
