RNU Supports Inner City Communities

category national | anti-capitalism | press release author Monday April 11, 2011 20:09author by Republican Network for Unity - Republican Network For Unity Report this post to the editors

The Republican Network for Unity sends its unequivocal support and solidarity to the working class, inner city communities throughout the country.

Through the turmoil of political instability and a crippled economy caused by those who continue to enslave the working class, pandemic levels of poverty continue to grasp the worker. Many inner city communities have falling victim to this unforgivable act of barbarism towards humanity.

Discrimination in housing has long being a contentious issue for many inner city families across the country. Many families throughout Ireland are suffering through sheer neglect. This result stems from the landlords who have carefully fostered these conditions, and manipulated a countless number of families for their own advantage with only one thing in mind, profit.

Today in Dublin, many inner city communities are being destroyed by private property developers who are collaborating with Dublin City Council all in the name of profit. Ballymun, Dolphins Barn, Rialto, Saint Michael’s Estate, Charlemont Street have all become victims of this process, but this is only the tip of the iceberg, many more communities throughout Dublin remain in the same situation as do many more across the country.

Recently in Dublin, families watched news reports of how a young mother “Rachel Peavoy” died of hypothermia when Dublin City Council turned her heating off to finish the process of depopulating her Flats Complex. And although the coroners report into Rachel’s death stated “death by misadventure,” her family remains steadfast in their determination to seek justice for Rachel through a public inquiry and hold Dublin City Council accountable for her death.

It is unimaginable to think that in the 21st Century, families are still being forced to live in squalor while at the same time, expected to pay rent for inadequate homes, homes unfit for standard living conditions, homes riddled with dampness and sewerage problems that are a threat to the health for the inhabitants. And still to this day, the Council’s continue to breach the United Nations Article 11, General Comment 4, The Right to Adequate Housing and with no reprisals for their actions.

As it stands, communities today are still being plagued by anti-social elements and drug pushers hell-bent on causing as much misery to their neighbours as they can possibly achieve. As a result of this, the youth of today are exposed to these dangers and many of them are turning to drugs as a means to escape reality. This should not be the case, why should our youth have to suffer because of the States failure to properly look after the citizens of this country. These problems would not exist only for poverty.

These are only some of the problems that inner city communities have to live through on a daily basis. The Council, as our landlords, are responsible for the wellbeing of its tenants, but instead they have neglected and abused the rights of many working class families throughout the country.

The Republican Network for Unity supports all inner city communities and aim to act fast and to empower all communities across the country in a co-ordinated effort against the capitalist class. This is a relentless struggle for our socio-economic liberation, and we call for social unity from all quarters, from all socialists, and not to just support the popular topics but support the working class communities who need our help now more than ever!

• RNU demand an end to the negligence of all inner city communities across the country by the hands of the landlords and State.

• RNU demand that no family should have to pay rent, especially while living in homes that have deteriorated into disrepair.

• RNU demand the right, for inner city communities, to the ownership of their homes and the right to adequate housing.

• RNU demand that the landlords responsible for the wellbeing of its tenants to fully comply with the United Nations Article 11, General Comment 4, The Right to Adequate Housing.

• RNU support Rachel Peavoy’s family in their quest for a public inquiry into her death.

• RNU demand an end to all anti-social behaviour that only drives a further wedge between broken communities.
