A Sham Listening Process By A Bankrupt Government

COMMUNIST PARTY OF IRELAND

11th December 08

PRESS RELEASE.

*SHAM LISTENING PROCESS*

The last vestiges of Fianna Fail and this ramshackle coalition government pretense of "listening" to the people and protecting the vital interest of the Irish people and the sovereignty of our country have finally been exposed. For Fianna Fail to declare that they have secure the concerns of the Irish people by a few meaningless declarations is nothing but a sham.

The Irish government has conspired with the EU Commission and the EU elites to undermine Irish democracy and to pressurise and bully the Irish people into holding a second referendum on the Treaty of Lisbon to politically engineer a result they could not achieve first time round .

The Irish and EU establishments who constantly lecture everyone on democracy and respecting the will of the people, their commitment to such principles has once again been shown to be nothing more than a hollowed out chichi, devoid of any meaning or substance and replaced with do as we say not as we do.

It is clear that the neo-liberalist economic policies encouraged and promoted by the EU have been a major factor in the growing economic crisis across the EU, policies that will be further strengthened by the provisions of the Lisbon Treaty.

This rejected treaty that this bankrupt government wishes to impose once again upon the Irish people can only make our problems worse and limit our ability to find solutions to meet our specific needs at this time.

One of the central lesson to be drawn from the first referendum is that workers voted NO in very large numbers to defend their rights and working conditions as well as the public services they rely upon. Workers rights are constantly under threat from the EU and the judgements of the European Court of Justice, a court that is to be given even greater powers over the lives of tens of millions of workers across the EU if this treaty is forced through.

The Communist Party calls for the maximum mobilisation and resistance to this governments efforts to force a yes vote upon the people and called for the maximum unity of all democratic forces.
Statement ends.
