Last night's violence in Epping is the desperate cry of people who have been ignored for decades, says David Shipley. Violence must be condemned. But if the state doesn?t change course, and fast, we will see many Eppings.

From vaccine passports in 2021 to 'Britcard' digital ID in 2025, it's becoming clear we need a Digital Bill of Rights to protect us from being brought under the technocratic grip of a surveillance state, says Alan Miller.

Why is the modern world so unremittingly ugly, wonders Joanna Gray. As yet another interchangeable block of beige bricks springs up in town, the contrast with the glories of the structures our ancestors built is damning.

This was the week that the climate consensus died in Parliament, says Ben Pile. In the debate that followed Ed Miliband's statement on "nature and climate" something new was heard in the House of Commons: dissent.

Amnesty: Jeff Halper Public Talk, Dublin

Leading Israeli human rights activist speaks at public talk in Dublin

Amnesty International Irish Section, Trócaire and the Irish Centre for Human Rights host:

Jeff Halper, leading Israeli human rights activist

For thirty years Jeff Halper has been one of the leading figures in the Israeli peace movement. Co-founder and Director of the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions. He has just published a new book, “An Israeli in Palestine: Resisting Dispossession, Redeeming Israel”.

Jeff Halper is credited with pioneering the use of nonviolent action and civil disobedience to resist the Israeli policy of demolishing Palestinian homes and mobilizing international support to rebuild these houses. Since 1967 18,000 Palestinian homes have been demolished in the Occupied Territories in violation of international law.

‘’In all the coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict the courageous work of the Israeli peace movement rarely gets the attention it deserves,” said Amnesty International Irish Section Executive Director Colm O’Gorman. Jeff Halper and Israeli peace activists like him have chosen to stand with oppressed Palestinian communities in a common struggle to achieve a just peace between Israelis and Palestinians based on human rights and equality.

His visit to Ireland is an opportunity for people to learn more about what conditions are like for Palestinians whose homes are destroyed as a form of collective punishment or to clear space for illegal Israeli settlements. It is also a rare chance to hear the point of view of Israelis who are opposing their government’s actions. During his visit he will be speaking at a number of public meetings around the country, including Dublin:

Tuesday 3 June: Royal Dublin Hotel, O’Connell Street, Dublin. 7.30pm.

All are welcome; admission free.
