Love has no Gender- Valentines Protest for Gay Marraige Rights

category national | rights, freedoms and repression | feature author Friday February 15, 2008 00:15author by Paula Geraghtyauthor email mspgeraghty at yahoo dot ie Report this post to the editors

You'd want to be desperate to send Bertie a Valentine's card!

Bringing the love...

Bertie was asked to come out to share the love, but he was just nowhere to be seen.
LGBT (Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgendered) Rights activists are desperate indeed. Two months ago they held their first public event highlighting the demand for legislation on recognising Gay Marriage. Why on earth would someone want to get married, some may ask. But it's not simply about a ring on a finger, a chance to wear some fine frocks and outlandish hats but about equality.' We want the right to be miserable like straight people' quipped one participant. But marriage isn't just an institution which many reading Indymedia.ie may oppose but it's about enshrining rights.

If you're gay and your lover or life partner is from outside the EU, how do you stay together. Easy if your straight, get married, get residency status and follow the rest through. If your partner is same sex your relationship has no legal standing. this has a massive impact on adoption rights, inheritance, how you are treated in hospital when the issue of next of kin arises. The integrity of a loving relationship with same sex or transgendered partners is simply not recognised in this state. And it's time this changed.

No one is looking for special rights, just equal rights. NOW!

If this is how you feel then rather than wasting your time campaigning for the legalisation of Gay marriage why not campaign for the abolition of all state recognition of hetrosexual marriage.

Shouldnt cohabiting couples (even if theyre hetrosexual) have the same legal rights (tax, inheritance pensions, medical and wotnot) as those daft enough to blow twenty grand on a day out their embarrasing relations ?

In fact I've done it too. & long after most other married couples regardless of gender have lost their ardour & passion - I feel no less satisfaction in the fitting decision I made that day. Soon enough the happy divorce will be through & then I'll do it all over again. Ye can do it too.
Don't waste marriage on love. USE IT.
it's a gift.

On the face of it an excellent idea but a few pitfalls.

First off you need to be either
1) Pretty poor yourself
2) An excellent judge of character so as to be able to identify poor people who are trustworthy (possesion of crystal ball would be an advantage)
3) If not No 1 above than possesing of an ability to conceal ones wealth that would make a Taoiseach proud.

Otherwise come the happy day in the divorce courts you could find yourself being stung for alimony ?

The awarding of alimony in European divorce courts though predominantly based child welfare or dissolution of joint interest holdings issues has yet to satisfactorily be seen tested in national or regional state courts to the extent of European court hearing & precedent ruling or subsequent organic legislation changes.

yep.
the wiggies of the EU court haven't got to exploring single sex civil contracts or marriage at all yet. How does the universal grounds for disolution of marriage contract (including even Christian notions of anullment) that is non-consumation apply to male & male or female & female civil union? What is consumation between men or women?

Even Ireland with her usual devotion to embryonic issues only got to something similar in the last two years in the "who owns a frozen embyro"/"does a frozen embryo have a right to 1 in 3 chances of succesful gestation & life" debacle. Thankfully the issue was so complicated that almost everyone couldn't deal with it & not even the professional liar (&/or) sophist sector of our society (the lawyers) could be bothered offering to take it all the way to the top.

Gosh. I'm not being simple. Ok. my golden rule don't waste marriage on love - use it - it is a gift has to be suplemented with citation of another golden rule don't be rich. (especially if you're getting married). This is very uncomfortable for me, Michael of the Judean's peoples' front, I hope you realise I can't realistically go on formulating a golden axiom every 48 hours or offering you a peep at such mind blowingly complex legal problems as consumation of marriage between lesbians.

I'll be honest & frank - it's much simpler & better in the long run to simply write living wills, declare your love & then tactically marry a poor person who needs a visa or residence.
