Last night's violence in Epping is the desperate cry of people who have been ignored for decades, says David Shipley. Violence must be condemned. But if the state doesn?t change course, and fast, we will see many Eppings.

From vaccine passports in 2021 to 'Britcard' digital ID in 2025, it's becoming clear we need a Digital Bill of Rights to protect us from being brought under the technocratic grip of a surveillance state, says Alan Miller.

offsite link Why is Modernity so Ugly? Fri Jul 18, 2025 11:00 | Joanna Gray
Why is the modern world so unremittingly ugly, wonders Joanna Gray. As yet another interchangeable block of beige bricks springs up in town, the contrast with the glories of the structures our ancestors built is damning.

Ever wondered what to do when they knock on your door...?

The Citizen's Manifesto

Doorstepping the doorsteppers? Give them YOUR leaflet.

I've been wondering for some time what to do when canvassers call to my door. In the past I've found myself engaged in acrimonious arguments with people against whom I bear no personal animosity, perfectly nice people who just happen to represent a party I dislike.

Recently the idea came to me: Why not give THEM a leaflet explaining my point of view?

As you will see, the attached Citizen's Manifesto (a PDF) expresses my own political position. I attach it merely as a sample and urge you to create your own. On the other hand, you're welcome to just print mine off and hand it out, if it suits.

This PDF can also be downloaded from my website at www.williamwall.eu

It seems to me to be an active form of citizenship.

If you like the idea, please pass it on.

That's a great idea. My only criticism is that you don't mention the massive giveaway of the country's natural resources. How about :

12: Because you have facilitated the giveaway of our oil and gas, ensuring that the people of Ireland see no lasting benefit from their precious resources, while putting the lives of the people of Erris at risk, purely to save money for Shell's shareholders.

I should have thought of that! That really bugs me. I've more or less decided though that I won't revise the manifesto any further - at least for the time being. Why not do it yourself?
Thanks for responding.
